Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin
Pediatric Pathology, the division within the Department of Pathology, supports inpatient and outpatient testing for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW), a 320-bed free-standing institution which is annually ranked in national surveys and has one of the largest and most comprehensive subspecialty practices in the nation. The CHW Clinical Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and recently underwent transformation into a LEAN environment to improve turn-around time for central core tests. The laboratory performs approximately 900,000 tests annually, including chemistry, genetic, metabolic, hematology, and microbiology assays. Pediatric Pathology supports its own clinical histology laboratory for anatomic pathology which processes approximately 6,000 pediatric surgical pathology specimens with intraoperative frozen sections and in-house ancillary tests; 300 pediatric bone marrow specimens with flow cytometry; 1000 cytopathology cases; 600 placentas; and 70 fetal, perinatal and pediatric autopsies. The Division partners with CHW and MCW on additional CAP-accredited labs focusing on whole genome sequencing, respiratory virus testing, and nerve and muscle pathology. Also overseen by Pediatric Pathology are the core laboratories – histology, imaging, and biobank – of the Children’s Research Institute.
Pediatric Pathology clinical faculty include seven specialty board-certified pathologists (including pediatric, hematopathology, and neuropathology certification) and three clinical PhD scientists (including chemistry and microbiology certification). Divisional research faculty include an additional four PhD scientists. Research interests include congenital muscle disorders, placental and vascular biology, vascular tumors and malformations, pediatric solid tumors, sudden infant death syndrome, pharmacogenomics, and global health. The Division also has a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in pediatric pathology.
